The "it" red of the summer, Carmenere is having a renaissance in 2023, and is the flagship wine of Chile. However the varietal is relatively unknown, because the best expressions of Carmenere are usually labeled as something else. Montes Purple Angel, Errazuriz Kai, and former Wine Spectator Wine of the Year: Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta. Carmenere with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, Casa Donoso’s ripe, red fruit notes are complemented by eight months in French oak. Red-violet in color, brilliant and vivid, this Reserva shows ripe blackberries, tobacco, and spices. Juicy, full-bodied, and concentrated with plush tannins and a long, lingering finish. An amazing value for under $15 a bottle!
"Plums, wild berries, violets, lemon zest and cedar on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine-grained, silky tannins and fresh acidity. Sleek and refined with a juicy finish. Delicious now." James Suckling, 91 Points
